New use of graphene: non-toxic hair dye

Graphene, often called a "magic material," is a single layer of carbon atoms that has captured the attention of scientists worldwide. Recently, researchers have discovered a new and innovative use for this remarkable material: creating a safer alternative to traditional hair dyes. Led by Professor Huang Jiaxing from Northwestern University, the team developed a hair dye that is significantly less harmful than conventional options. Traditional hair dyes typically contain harsh chemicals like ammonia, which work by lifting the cuticle layers of each hair strand. This process allows color molecules to penetrate and alter the hair’s natural pigment. However, this method can damage the hair over time, leading to dryness and breakage. Moreover, these small colorant molecules can be absorbed through the skin, potentially causing allergic reactions or other health concerns. In contrast, the graphene-based hair dye developed by the research team is non-toxic and chemically stable. The formula includes tiny graphene particles that wrap around each hair strand, forming a smooth, even coating. This not only gives the hair a natural, vibrant color but also helps maintain its strength and shine. The dye also contains a safe polymer binder that ensures the graphene adheres well to the hair, lasting through at least 30 washes without fading. Another advantage of using graphene is that its larger size prevents it from penetrating the skin, making it much safer than traditional dyes. Additionally, graphene has antistatic properties, which means the dye can help reduce frizz and static in the hair. The application process is quick and simple—just apply the dye and let it dry for under 10 minutes. The researchers used a more affordable form of graphene called graphene oxide, keeping production costs low. According to Professor Huang Jiaxing, this innovation opens up exciting possibilities. “People can use this hair dye to make the hair surface conductive,” he explained. “This could allow integration with wearable electronics or even serve as a conductive probe. The only limit is our imagination.”
