China's breakthrough in the field of photonics materials can be used for laser protection

Wang Jun, a researcher at the Shanghai Institute of Optomechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Zhang Long, Zhao Quanzhong, and Werner Blau, a foreign expert special researcher at the Shanghai Institute of Optomechanics, and others, reported for the first time the excellent ultrafast saturation absorption properties of two-dimensional layered MoS2 nanomaterials in the near infrared band. Related research results have been published in "American Chemical Society-Nano".

According to reports, two-dimensional nanomaterials of transition metal sulfides, such as MoS2, MoSe2, MoTe2, and WS2, have been highly valued by academia. Many unique photoelectric properties are reflected after the material is degraded from the bulk material to the two-dimensional monolayer. This kind of material has become one of the core materials for the international frontier research of a new generation of high-performance nano-optical devices. However, there are few reports on the ultrafast nonlinear optical properties and corresponding photonic devices of such wide band gap direct band gap semiconductor two-dimensional nanosheets.

The above research team successfully prepared high-quality MoS2 nanosheet dispersions using liquid-phase stripping technology. Transmission electron microscopy, visible-infrared absorption spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy have shown that there are a large number of high-quality MoS2 nanosheets in the dispersion. Ultrafast nonlinear optical experiments confirmed that the MoS2 nanosheets have a more excellent saturation absorption response to 100fs, 800nm ​​near infrared laser pulses than graphene.

Industry experts said that these results herald the great potential of the transition metal sulfide two-dimensional nano-semiconductor materials represented by MoS2 in the development of photonic devices such as ultrashort pulse mode-lockers, laser protective optical limiters, and optical switches.
