On May 12, 2008, Li Liyou officially became the president and CEO of Spreadtrum. At 14:28 on the same day, a large earthquake of magnitude 8 on the Richter scale broke out in Wenchuan, Sichuan Province. Li Liyou, who was thousands of miles away, felt a slight shock in his new office.

In 2007, Spreadtrum successfully landed on NASDAQ and was hailed as the first share of China's 3G. By the end of 2008, the price of Spreadtrum, which had been listed for more than a year, fell to 73 cents, and it has been forced to the edge of delisting. By February 2009, Spreadtrum had almost reached the brink of bankruptcy. According to the old employees of Spreadtrum, all the liquidity of the company at that time could only barely maintain the operational needs of the two quarters. To make matters worse, there is only one customer left in the company, and subsequent development is unsustainable.

For the predicament faced by Spreadtrum at that time, the industry and the outside world were full of doubts about whether Li Liyou, who had just finished his new job, could turn the tide. But the end result made everyone stunned.

The data shows that since Li Liyou took over the exhibition, Spreadtrum’s annual revenue has increased tenfold, and the market value has soared 51 times. In 2016, Spreadtrum's chip shipments accounted for 27% of the global total, becoming one of the world's largest mobile phone chip suppliers.

For this achievement, Li Liyou is very indifferent.

In his office located less than 20 square meters in the Zhangjiang Exhibition Building, when asked "what kind of ability is needed to complete such a terrible reversal", Li Liyou simply said "luck." He smiled. "The revenue of Spreadtrum was almost zero at the time. I don't think I can turn this number into a negative value!"

But in fact, Li Liyou can lead the exhibition to get out of the predicament more from his pragmatic spirit and grasp of the general trend.

Li Liyou chose Zhangjiang, a fashion immature, and the impending exhibition news as a new stop for his career, mainly because he accurately grasped the prospects of China's chip industry and Zhangjiang's development.

Li Liyou said that as early as in the United States, he believed that in the era of global integration, the industrial transfer of the West and the industrial upgrading of the East will become the main features of this era. On the other hand, when the exhibition was just established in 2001, the Shanghai Municipal Government and the Zhangjiang Management Committee not only gave great support and help to the exhibition, but also found 10 million yuan for the exhibition through various means. In Li Liyou's view, Zhangjiang's semiconductor industry has not only exceeded 100 billion in scale, but also formed a complete industrial chain of R&D, production, sales and application. It can be said that Zhangjiang is more in line with the name of Silicon Valley than Silicon Valley in the United States.

Take Spreadtrum's products as an example. In the 2G era, Spreadtrum's products lag behind European and American technology for about 15 years. In the 3G era, the gap has been shortened to less than 10 years, and in the 4G era, it has been compressed to less than 3 years.
