Li Liyou: Spreadtrum Introduces 40-nm LTE Chip During the Year

On August 16th, Spreadtrum's chairman and CEO Li Liyou said in an interview with NetEase Technology this afternoon that before the end of this year, Spreadtrum is expected to introduce LTE chips based on 40nm technology.

Li Liyou introduced that compared with the 65nm and 45nm communication chips that are more common in the industry today, the adoption of 40nm technology means that the performance and integration of communication chips are higher, while the power consumption and cost are even lower.

It is understood that Spreadtrum has launched the world's first commercial TD-HSPA/TD-SCDMA multi-mode communication chip SC8800G with 40-nanometer technology in January 2011, and a number of mobile phones based on this chip have also been released.

All chips will be based on 40nm technology According to Spreadtrum's plans, by 2012, all of the company's chip products will be based on 40nm technology, including mobile phones chips such as 2.5G, 3G (TD-SCDMA, WCDMA) and LTE. product.

Li Liyou believes that the above measures will enable Spreadtrum to surpass its competitors in chip technology. Currently, the industry is more commonly used 65-nanometer and 45-nanometer technology. It is understood that at this stage, the global 3G terminal chip adopts more 65-nanometer technology, while the 45-nanometer 3G mobile phone chip introduced by Qualcomm has not yet achieved mass production.

In contrast, Spreadtrum’s 40-nm TD-HSPA/TD-SCDMA multimode chip, which was launched in January of this year, has led to a significant drop in the cost of TD-SCDMA terminals, which is basically the same as the 2.5G terminal cost.

Li Liyou introduced that the above-mentioned decline in terminal costs has caused its shipment volume to enter a fast-growing track. According to statistics, in the domestic 2.5G market, Spreadtrum’s share accounts for approximately 30%; and in the TD market, Spreadtrum’s share has increased from the original 30% to nearly 60%.

TD chips have joined the supply chain of Samsung and other manufacturers. It is understood that among the new chip products launched by Spreadtrum, there are already a series of chips and solutions that can be used in smart terminal products, but chip products used for non-intelligent terminals still account for the majority. At the same time, mobile phone makers that cooperate with Spreadtrum are still mainly local companies, but some chip products, including TD chips, have been added to the supply chain of Samsung and other mobile phone manufacturers.

Li Liyou, for example, recently announced that in addition to a strategic cooperation with a local mobile phone maker, “Card Europe and the United States,” and providing chip products to non-smart phones, smart phones, and tablet computers, Spreadtrum’s chip products will continue to Samsung. And other foreign mobile phone manufacturers output.

According to reports, Samsung GALAXY S2, the mobile customized version of the world's thinnest dual-core smartphone expected to be launched this month, uses Spreadtrum’s TD-chip products.

According to the latest report released by Spreadtrum, in the second quarter of 2011, the company achieved revenue of US$160 million, a year-on-year increase of 124.2%, a year-on-year increase of 16.9%, and a net profit of US$32.5 million, a year-on-year increase of 193% and a year-on-year increase of 18.2%.
