LED lighting pursues high efficiency and should also pay attention to "light quality"

The US Xicato company will promote high-power LED lighting modules to replace halogen lamps. The company not only sells products with luminous fluxes of 400 lm, 700 lm, and 1000 lm, but also adds 1300 lm products in October 2010, and adds 2000 lm-class products from the end of 2010 to the beginning of 2011. A few days ago, the reporter interviewed the company's president Mark Pugh about Xicato's business goals in the field of LED lighting.

Reporter: Please talk about the reasons for the halogen lamp replacement product business.

Pugh: Replacing halogen lamps with LEDs not only greatly reduces power consumption, but also saves the trouble of replacing the light source with the advantage of long life. It takes only about two years to recover the initial investment in LED lighting equipment. This is the biggest reason. It takes 5 years to replace the halogen lamp with a bulb-type fluorescent lamp to recover the initial investment. In comparison, the effect of replacing the LED is more remarkable.

Although we are now promoting products in Japan, the United States and Europe, the original products are launched in the European market. The reason is that we hope that our products will be well received in Europe. Electricity in Europe is high and environmental awareness is strong. The most important thing is that Europe places great emphasis on the quality of lighting such as color rendering and color uniformity. The feeling is that for manufacturers who supply lighting fixtures to shops, hotels and art galleries, the priority of light source selection is the quality of light in the first place, followed by energy efficiency. Therefore, although halogen lamps are less energy efficient, halogen lamps are still widely used in Europe. In other words, even if these manufacturers know that the energy loss will be less when they switch to LEDs, they are far from the LEDs that use the illumination light to cause color unevenness, and halogen lamps have been used. Our product uses a technology called Remote Phosphor that separates the LED chip from the phosphor in the module to achieve uniform light intensity and color. Therefore, the company's products can eliminate the concern of European lighting manufacturers for LED.

Reporter: When did you start to launch products for the European market?

Pugh: The company started operations in 2007 after independence from Philips Lumileds Lighting. After the development of the "XSM" product to replace the halogen lamp in July 2008, it began to introduce to European lighting manufacturers and began mass production in December 2008. The adoption in Europe is large, for example, 700 stores in the UK have introduced the company's products.

I always think that "LEDs can be applied to lighting around 2008". And I also think that in order to differentiate products, light quality is more important than luminous flux and luminous efficiency. I think the company's startup and product supply are very timely.

After the European manufacturers, I think that the adoption of our LED modules by US manufacturers and Japanese manufacturers will also increase. The Japanese market is very active in adopting LED lighting, and our products are more likely to be promoted in the Japanese market than the US market.

Reporter: In addition to the quality of light, what are the characteristics of Xicato products?

Pugh: The ease of operation of the LED module. Most lighting fixture manufacturers have previously purchased lamps as a light source from outside when designing lighting fixtures. When it is replaced by LED lighting, this approach will almost never work at this stage. At this time, it is no longer possible to install the light source in a "plug and play" manner as before. In order to obtain the same optical output power as a halogen lamp, it is necessary to use multiple LEDs (each LED has a small output power). In a sense, it can be said that the lighting fixture manufacturer has to make the light source by itself.

The company's products are round-shaped LED modules with a diameter of 45mm (thickness さ 17mm) instead of MR16 halogen lamps. They are available in brightness of 400lm, 700lm and 1000lm, and will be added with higher brightness in the future. Lighting fixture manufacturers only need to purchase the company's products as if they were purchasing halogen lamps, and install them on lighting fixtures. In this way, the lighting fixture manufacturer does not have to manufacture the light source by itself, and can realize plug and play as before.

Secondly, as long as the junction surface temperature of the lighting fixture and the LED module is below 90 ° C, this is also a major advantage of the company's LED module. This reduces the number of heat sinks placed on the fixture.

Reporter: Will the LED module be degraded if it reaches a high temperature of 90 °C?

Pugh: Our products use Remote Phosphor technology to work at high temperatures. By separating the blue LED chip forming the high temperature from the phosphor during the lighting process, the phosphor is prevented from deteriorating after being heated, and the luminescent characteristics are significantly changed.

Reporter: The low-cost competition for LED lighting is increasing, and it is estimated that it will become more intense in the future. Can Xicato, which emphasizes light quality, cope with this competition?

Pugh: In the field of lighting applications with brightness and luminous efficiency as the first priority, cost competition will become increasingly fierce in the future, but lighting applications that emphasize light quality will not. In the field of lighting applications that the company is aiming for, lighting design companies will never choose products with low light quality. In fact, in the process of negotiating with lighting design companies that value light quality, there are few products that can compete with our products. If the lighting design company pays attention to brightness and luminous efficiency, competitors should have appeared long ago...

But this is not to say that our products are not price competitive, or the luminous efficiency is worse than other products. By using the Remote Phosphor technology, the blue LED chips packaged in the LED module can be used by many chip manufacturers. Due to the wide range of choices, the best chips can be selected depending on the situation.

Reporter: Xicato plans to increase the brightness of LED modules with high light quality to 1300 lm and 2000 lm in the future. Will I introduce dimming functions that change the color of the illuminating light in the future?

Pugh: I have this plan. The use of LED lighting color temperatures in the morning, day and night is getting more and more attention, but for us, this is not the top priority. We will expand our brighter alternative halogen lamps while achieving high light quality. At this stage, we can only say that we have the idea of ​​changing the color temperature.
