China successfully realized the world's first "soft endoscope manipulation robot" human clinical operation

In a groundbreaking achievement, Professor Yang Yunsheng, Chairman of the Chinese Medical Association Digestive Diseases Branch and Head of the Gastroenterology Department at the General Hospital of the People's Liberation Army, successfully performed the world's first human gastroscopic operation using the "Soft Endoscopic Manipulation Robot" at the Digestive Endoscopy Center. The procedure was smooth, with clear imaging and high satisfaction from the robotic system. Ren Guojun, Director of the General Hospital, and Ma Liang, Director of the Department of Internal Medicine, were present to observe and provide guidance. The "Soft Endoscope Manipulating Robot" is a national science and technology support project led by Professor Yang Yunsheng. It was developed in collaboration with the State Key Laboratory of Robotics at the Shenyang Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences. From the initial concept to iterative design, in vitro and animal testing, safety evaluations, and ethical approvals, the project took five years to complete. According to researcher Liu Hao from the Shenyang Institute of Automation, the soft endoscope control robot works alongside existing clinical soft endoscopes. It enables precise control of the endoscope’s movement, significantly increasing automation. This reduces the physical strain on doctors and lays the foundation for high-quality, standardized procedures and remote medical treatment through the internet. This marks the first successful human clinical use of a soft endoscopic manipulation robot globally. The innovation by the PLA General Hospital has placed it at the forefront of international research in this field. For many years, China relied heavily on imported endoscopic equipment. The successful development of this system represents a major breakthrough in soft endoscopy, marking a milestone in the evolution of endoscopic technology. It signals the transition from manual to automated and intelligent endoscopic procedures, heralding a new era in the field. Dean Ren Guojun of the General Hospital strongly supported the project and provided valuable suggestions for accelerating its development. He emphasized the importance of military-civilian integration, military medical support, and technological advancement. Under his guidance, the research team is committed to enhancing independent innovation and improving both service quality and military medical capabilities through advanced technology.
