China successfully realized the world's first "soft endoscope manipulation robot" human clinical operation

Recently, Professor Yang Yunsheng, chairman of the Chinese Medical Association Digestive Diseases Branch and head of the Gastroenterology Department at the General Hospital of the People's Liberation Army, successfully performed the world's first human gastroscopic operation using a "soft endoscopic manipulation robot" in the Digestive Endoscopy Center. The procedure was smooth, with clear imaging and high satisfaction from the robotic system. Ren Guojun, director of the General Hospital, and Ma Liang, director of the Department of Internal Medicine, were on-site to observe and provide guidance.

The "Soft Endoscope Manipulating Robot" is a national science and technology support project led by Professor Yang Yunsheng. It was developed in collaboration with the State Key Laboratory of Robotics at the Shenyang Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The project spanned five years, involving concept development, iterative design, in vitro and animal testing, safety evaluations, and ethical approvals.

According to researcher Liu Hao from the Shenyang Institute of Automation, the soft endoscope control robot works alongside existing clinical soft endoscopes. It allows for precise control of the endoscope’s movements through automated systems, reducing the physical burden on doctors. This innovation lays the foundation for standardized, high-quality medical procedures and supports the development of remote medical treatment.

The successful completion of the first human clinical operation using the soft endoscopic manipulation robot marks a significant milestone. The research conducted by the PLA General Hospital has placed China at the forefront of this technological advancement. For many years, China has relied heavily on imported endoscopic equipment. This breakthrough represents a major leap forward in domestic soft endoscopy technology, signaling a new era of automation and intelligence in endoscopic procedures.

Director Ren Guojun of the General Hospital strongly supported the project, emphasizing the importance of accelerating its development. He encouraged the team to focus on military-civilian integration and to enhance military medical support. Under his guidance, the research group aims to promote independent innovation and improve both service quality and medical capabilities through advanced technology.
