AEye launches iDAR smarter than LiDAR for fast dynamic sensing and path planning

AEye has launched its groundbreaking True Color LiDAR, which enables 2D RDG pixels to instantly cover all 3D points in space. According to Memes Consulting, AEye is a leader in robotic sensing and has introduced a new intelligent data acquisition method called iDARTM for fast dynamic sensing and path planning. iDAR (Intelligent Detection and Ranging) combines the world's first sensitive MOEMS LiDAR, a low-light camera, embedded AI, software-definable features, and hardware scalability, allowing real-time adjustments based on dynamic needs. This technology offers higher accuracy, longer range, and more intelligent data, improving the safety and performance of autonomous vehicles at a lower cost. iDAR intelligently prioritizes and interrogates both 2D pixels and 3D voxels within a frame, making it up to 10–20 times more efficient than traditional LiDAR in identifying objects. It also overlays 2D images onto 3D point clouds, creating true color LiDAR that enhances perception with computer vision algorithms. In September, AEye demonstrated a 360-degree solid-state LiDAR system with a 300-meter detection range and HD resolution. The company recently introduced iDAR technology, which was showcased at CES 2018. Luis Dussan, CEO of AEye, emphasized that early LiDAR systems had limitations in sampling density and latency, leading to reduced smart sensing capabilities. With iDAR, the system can re-detect objects in just 30 microseconds—3000 times faster than traditional systems. This embedded intelligence allows for optimized data collection, reducing the amount of data transmitted while maintaining high quality and relevance. AEye also announced the iDAR Partner Development Program, aimed at OEMs, Tier 1 partners, and universities interested in integrating iDAR into vehicles. The platform is open, allowing integration of top sensors to boost performance, redundancy, and cost efficiency. iDAR uses solid-state LiDAR with a 1550nm light source, enabling dynamic control of each frame’s homogeneity and focus. This helps path planning software process key areas or objects with minimal delay, improving behavior prediction and decision-making. A major drawback of traditional LiDAR is its lack of color detail, making it hard to distinguish road markings, signs, and traffic lights. iDAR’s True Color LiDAR overlays real-world colors onto 3D data, eliminating post-processing delays and improving accuracy. This makes it easier to interpret critical visual cues like brake lights and warning signals. The iDAR platform features software-definable hardware, offering unprecedented feedback loops between the sensor layer and path planning software. It allows real-time customization, adapting to different environments such as highways or city driving. Through its API, AEye enables multilayer customization, empowering OEMs and suppliers to take control of their development processes. Additionally, iDAR supports remote firmware and software updates, allowing rapid prototyping without hardware changes. As a milestone in next-generation vision systems, iDAR continues AEye’s leadership in smart sensing since introducing solid-state LiDAR in 2013. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, AEye is backed by top investors like Kleiner Perkins, Airbus Ventures, and Intel Capital.
