AEye launches iDAR smarter than LiDAR for fast dynamic sensing and path planning
AEye has launched its groundbreaking True Color LiDAR, which integrates 2D RDG pixels to instantly cover every 3D point in space. According to Memes Consulting, AEye is a leader in robotic sensing and has introduced a new intelligent data acquisition method called iDARTM. This technology enables fast dynamic sensing and path planning. iDAR combines the world’s first sensitive MOEMS LiDAR with a low-light camera, embedded AI, software-defined flexibility, and hardware extensibility, allowing real-time adjustments based on dynamic needs. It offers higher accuracy, longer range, and more intelligent data, significantly improving the safety and performance of autonomous vehicles at a lower cost.
iDAR intelligently prioritizes and interrogates both 2D pixels and 3D voxels, making it 10 to 20 times more efficient than traditional LiDAR in object detection and identification. The system can overlay 2D images onto 3D point clouds, creating true color LiDAR that enhances perception. Its embedded AI leverages thousands of computer vision algorithms to boost the intelligence of path planning software. In September, AEye demonstrated a 360-degree solid-state LiDAR with a 300-meter range and HD resolution. The company recently introduced iDAR technology, which was highlighted by CEO Luis Dussan as a breakthrough in overcoming limitations of older LiDAR systems.
Traditional LiDAR often oversamples unimportant areas like the sky or trees while missing critical details like approaching vehicles. iDAR mimics human visual attention, using distributed architecture and edge processing to dynamically track objects and assess the environment. Jon Lareau, AEye’s software director, emphasized that iDAR brings us closer to instinctive human responses by embedding intelligence into data collection. The platform is open, allowing integration of top sensors to enhance performance, reduce costs, and accelerate development.
True Color LiDAR addresses another key limitation of traditional systems: lack of detailed color information. By instantly overlaying real-world colors onto 3D data, iDAR adds computer vision intelligence to point clouds, eliminating post-processing delays. This improves accuracy in identifying traffic signs, lights, and other critical elements. The system also enhances training for autonomous vehicles through better data quality.
iDAR’s software-definable hardware allows real-time customization, adapting to different environments and applications. It enables dynamic focus on threats, optimizes data collection, and reduces bandwidth usage. With remote firmware updates, the system supports rapid design iterations without hardware changes. As a milestone in next-generation vision systems, iDAR represents a major leap forward in smart sensing for autonomous vehicles.
AEye develops advanced vision hardware, software, and algorithms to provide an "eye and visual cortex" for autonomous systems. Since introducing solid-state LiDAR in 2013, the company has led the way in smart sensing. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, AEye is backed by top investors including Kleiner Perkins, Airbus Ventures, and Intel Capital.
