Mass production of domestic OLED screens is expected to break the Korean monopoly
In the past, China struggled to develop its own OLED technology, which forced the country to rely heavily on foreign imports. However, this situation is changing rapidly. It has been reported that China is now on the verge of mass-producing its own OLED screens, which could significantly reduce its dependence on South Korean suppliers. This development is expected to challenge and eventually break the long-standing monopoly held by South Korean companies in the OLED market.
The surge in demand for OLED screens can be traced back to Apple's iPhone X, which was one of the first smartphones to feature an OLED display. Since then, the mobile phone industry has seen a major shift, with many top manufacturers incorporating OLED technology into their latest models. The superior color contrast and the sleek, full-screen design have made OLED-equipped devices increasingly popular among consumers.

Currently, small-size OLED technology is dominated by South Korean firms, particularly Samsung Display, which holds over 97% of the global market share for small-sized OLED panels. Despite producing hundreds of millions of units annually, Samsung struggles to meet the growing demand from smartphone manufacturers like Apple.

Faced with rising demand from Chinese smartphone makers, domestic suppliers have significantly ramped up their investments in OLED technology over the past two years. With strong financial backing from the Chinese mainland market and government support for new display technologies, it is expected that more companies will begin constructing new AMOLED production lines.
Several Chinese companies, including BOE, Tianma, Huaxing Optoelectronics, Hehui Optoelectronics, and Guoxian Optoelectronics, are already exploring or actively investing in OLED-related fields to challenge the dominance of South Korean firms.

However, the production of AMOLED screens remains technically challenging. In addition to requiring advanced backplane manufacturing capabilities, the evaporation and packaging processes of the organic light-emitting layer also pose significant hurdles. For instance, vapor deposition equipment is still largely imported from Japan and South Korea, with Canon Tokki’s 6th generation Half Cut machine being a key player in the industry.
Still, there is encouraging progress. Reports suggest that BOE’s Chengdu OLED production line is expected to start small-volume mass production by the end of October, making it the first domestic supplier to provide OLED panels to Chinese smartphone brands. This move could weaken Samsung’s control over the smartphone OLED market and accelerate the localization of OLED technology in China.
According to recent sources, Apple has conducted inspections at BOE, and it is likely that BOE’s OLED panels will first appear in the Apple Watch, with potential future integration into iPhone models as well. This marks a significant step forward for China’s display industry and signals a broader shift in the global OLED landscape.
