Shantou is still a trend to talk about the recent fiery quantum dot screen

The term "quantum dot screen" has recently captured widespread attention, largely due to LG G4. It's claimed that quantum dot technology offers a higher color gamut, greater brightness, better contrast, and more accurate color reproduction compared to traditional IPS panels. Now, the technology is making waves again in the TV industry as Samsung expresses skepticism about OLED's future, instead placing its hopes on quantum dot technology. What exactly is this "quantum dot technology," and can it potentially challenge the dominance of IPS and OLED screens in the mobile and television markets?
Quantum dots, also known as nanocrystals, are tiny particles ranging from 1 to 10 nanometers in size. When excited, they emit light with specific wavelengths, offering a much purer light output than conventional backlights. The quantum dot screen essentially enhances the backlight system of LCDs, resulting in more vibrant and accurate colors.
LCD displays rely heavily on their backlight systems, which play a crucial role in determining image quality. Quantum dot backlights produce purer light, leading to superior color performance compared to standard LED backlights. This makes them an attractive option for improving display quality.
OLED screens have traditionally been praised for their wide color gamuts, often exceeding 100% NTSC. According to WhyLab’s data, OLEDs typically outperform LCDs in this area. While quantum dot screens theoretically can reach up to 110% NTSC, real-world tests of the LG G4 only showed a color gamut of around 82.37%, which, while impressive, still falls short of OLED’s capabilities.
In our testing, the LG G4 achieved a peak brightness of 505 nits and a static contrast ratio of 1835:1 — both impressive figures that place it among the top-performing devices of its time. While the quantum dot screen has shown promise in terms of color gamut, brightness, and contrast, it hasn’t yet surpassed the best IPS or OLED panels. However, given the growing interest from major manufacturers like Samsung and LG, we believe the technology will continue to evolve rapidly. With increased investment and research, quantum dot screens could become a strong competitor in the future display market.
