BOE (BOE) Chairman Wang Dongsheng: The Path to Success in the Event of Things

On November 7th, Japan time, Wang Dongsheng, Chairman of BOE (BOE), delivered a keynote speech titled *"From the Display Device to the Smart Port: A Path to Success in the Era of Things"* at the 19th *Nikkei World Executive Conference*. As the sole Chinese business leader to address the event, his speech aligned with the conference's theme, *"Creating Opportunities from Disruptive Innovation,"* and offered valuable insights into industry trends, company transformation, and future strategies. Since the launch of the world’s first TFT-LCD production line in Nara, Japan, in 1991, the global semiconductor display industry has experienced rapid growth. By 2017, BOE’s Hefei 10.5-generation line was set to begin operations, marking a major milestone. The industry's annual output value reached over $120 billion, with investments in glass substrates equivalent to covering nearly 40,000 football fields. Semiconductor displays have become a key driver for the development of the ICT industry. Founded in 1993, BOE has always emphasized technological respect and innovation. Even during tough times, the company maintained a commitment to R&D, investing 7% of its revenue annually. This dedication has helped BOE grow into a leading innovative enterprise. According to the IHS Global LCD Panel Report, in the first three quarters of 2017, BOE accounted for about 25% of global shipments, ranking first in total volume. Wang Dongsheng highlighted that growth driven by mobile internet has slowed, but the Internet of Things (IoT) is now leading the next wave of the fourth industrial revolution. With AI and genetic technology as catalysts, this revolution is redefining both silicon-based and carbon-based life systems. He described it as an era where artificial intelligence enhances silicon-based systems, while advancements in AI and genetics push the evolution of carbon-based life. Looking ahead, BOE is focusing on the convergence of these two systems, laying out new business strategies to become a company that provides intelligent solutions for information interaction and human health. Through display technology, BOE is building capabilities in sensing, AI, and big data, expanding into smart systems and health services. McKinsey predicts that by 2025, the IoT market will grow tenfold from 2017 levels, reaching $11.2 trillion and contributing 10% of global GDP. However, realizing this potential requires overcoming challenges in data processing, algorithms, high-quality data, and security. Wang emphasized that success in the IoT era cannot be achieved alone. Collaboration is essential. He advocated for cross-industry partnerships to seize opportunities and drive progress. BOE remains committed to its open platform strategy—*"ICPST" (Integration of Chips, Panels, Software, and Things)*—to create value through innovation. By embracing openness, BOE aims to build strong relationships with partners across computing, storage, sensing, software, content, and various industries, ultimately delivering shared value and growth.
