On December 13, NetEase Smart News reported that a new book explores how sex robots could reshape the future of marriage. According to the authors, people may choose to marry for reasons other than sexual compatibility, much like how the invention of contraception changed societal views on women's sexuality. The development of realistic sex robots could lead to a reevaluation of the role of sexual relationships in marriage.

John Danaher, a legal lecturer at the National University of Ireland, stated, “We know that technology has influenced relationships in the past, so it’s reasonable to expect that sex robots will do the same.” He and Neil McArthur, a philosophy professor from the University of Manitoba, co-authored the book *Robot Sex: The Impact on Society and Ethics*, which was released last October. The book discusses how sex robots might influence various aspects of daily life, including social norms and personal relationships.

The book argues that as sex robots become more common, people may place less emphasis on sex when choosing a partner. For example, heterosexual couples might opt to marry and raise children together, knowing their sexual needs can be met by robots. This shift could increase acceptance of non-monogamous relationships, as the separation between sex and marriage becomes more normalized.

Marina Adshade, an economics lecturer at the University of British Columbia, noted that the demand for a new marriage model could drive the adoption of sex robot technology, ultimately leading to a transformation in how we define marriage. “The current trend suggests that the marriage system is evolving, and this evolution may be accelerated by the rise of sex robots,” she said in the book.

Danaher added, “I believe sex robots will further weaken the link between sex and marriage, encouraging people to focus more on companionship, emotional support, and shared values when choosing a partner.” However, he emphasized that current technology is still far from its full potential. While products like Samantha — a voice-activated AI doll priced at $5,000 — are available, they are just the beginning.

Danaher continued, “Sex robots like Samantha and Harmony are not yet what the future holds, but they represent a significant step forward. Advances in social robotics, including better AI, improved movement, and emotional replication, are happening fast. These features will eventually be integrated into sex robots. I don’t think single-purpose sex robots will last long. Instead, we’re likely to see multi-functional robots that offer both emotional connection and physical intimacy.”

Sergi Santos, the creator of Samantha, shared a similar vision. In an interview with *Inverse*, he described his robot as a “Guardian Angel” — a powerful, all-encompassing assistant. “Imagine a world where you don’t have to go to work, or worry about your health, because your cyborg knows everything about you and can even treat illness. That robot would be your protector, your angel,” he said. “What if we had a robot that took care of every aspect of our lives? It’s something worth imagining.”
