Antenna Solutions UCODE G2iL and G2iL+
NXP Semiconductors, a leading RFID chip supplier, has recently launched its latest UHF solution tailored for the fashion, retail, and electronics industries. The new UCODE G2iL and G2iL+ chips offer a cost-effective single-antenna design that delivers industry-leading read range. These tags come with advanced features such as tamper alarms, multiple privacy modes, password-protected data transmission, and digital switches—making them a groundbreaking innovation in the RFID space. With their exceptional performance and versatility, the UCODE G2iL series is ideal for item-level tracking and verification in advanced RFID systems, offering unmatched value for money.
Chris Feige, General Manager of NXP’s Semiconductor Labeling and Verification product line, emphasized the importance of long-range reading and tamper detection in RFID applications for large consumer electronics. “By eliminating the need for extra antennas, our solution provides effective privacy protection without additional costs,†he said. NXP’s RFID Applications and Systems Center has optimized these chips for real-world use in retail, apparel, and electronics sectors, ensuring top-tier performance and flexibility. While UCODE G2iL targets cost-sensitive applications, the G2iL+ introduces several first-of-its-kind features that set it apart in the market.
Maggie Bidlingmaier, Director of Global Sales and Marketing at Avery Dennison RFID, praised the UCODE G2iL+ for its wide-ranging applicability. “From apparel to vehicle tags and airline baggage, this chip offers features that are perfectly suited for multiple markets. We’re excited about the initial test results and look forward to collaborating with NXP to bring these innovative tags to the market.â€
Samuli Strömberg, Vice President of RFID Marketing at UPM Raflatac, highlighted the benefits of the high-performance UCODE G2iL and G2iL+ chips. “Faster read speeds and smaller inlays mean more efficient RFID solutions. With NXP’s superior sensitivity, we’re confident that these chips will drive the development of better cross-terminal applications across industries.â€
The UCODE G2iL and G2iL+ chips boast impressive sensitivity, reaching -18 dBm in single-antenna configurations. This means they require half the RF power of previous UCODE devices, achieving read ranges comparable to dual-antenna setups. When connected to a power source, the G2iL+ can push performance even further, reaching an astonishing -23 dBm.
In terms of special features, the UCODE G2iL series includes a Product Status Flag (PSF), which can be reset repeatedly to indicate whether a product has passed quality checks or acts as an EAS alarm. It also offers read protection through a 32-bit password, allowing only authorized access to EPC/TID memory.
The G2iL+ adds even more functionality, including a tag tamper alarm that detects unauthorized removal or movement of the tag. This is especially useful in retail settings where tags might be cut off in dressing rooms or sealed products may be tampered with. Additionally, the G2iL+ supports digital data transmission and a digital switch, enabling flexible configuration at different stages of the supply chain, from point-of-sale to inventory management. It also offers true read range reduction, limiting the read distance to just a few inches to prevent unauthorized access.
Built on NXP’s expertise in high-performance mixed-signal technology, the UCODE G2iL and G2iL+ chips combine ultra-low power consumption with advanced capabilities, making them a strong choice for a variety of RFID applications.
