Antenna Solutions UCODE G2iL and G2iL+
NXP Semiconductors, a leading supplier of RFID chips, has recently launched its latest UHF solution tailored for the fashion, retail, and electronics industries. The new UCODE G2iL and G2iL+ chips are designed with a single-antenna approach, offering an industry-leading read range while incorporating advanced features such as tag tamper alarms, multiple privacy modes, password-protected data transmission, and digital switches. These innovations make them the first of their kind in the market.
Chris Feige, General Manager of NXP’s Semiconductor Labeling and Verification product line, highlighted that the long-range reading capability combined with tamper alarms provides strong privacy protection without the need for extra antennas—making it ideal for large consumer electronics. The chips have been optimized through extensive testing for real-world applications across retail, apparel, and electronics markets. He emphasized that UCODE G2iL is perfect for cost-sensitive RFID applications, while UCODE G2iL+ brings several groundbreaking features to the table.
Maggie Bidlingmaier, Director of Global Sales and Marketing at Avery Dennison RFID, praised the UCODE G2iL+ for its versatility, stating it is well-suited for the apparel and electronics sectors, as well as for product validation, vehicle tags, and airline baggage tags. She expressed excitement about the performance of the new series and looks forward to collaborating with NXP on future tag developments.
Samuli Strömberg, Vice President of RFID Marketing at UPM Raflatac, noted that the high performance of the UCODE G2iL and G2iL+ enables faster read speeds and smaller inlays, which will drive innovation in cross-terminal RFID applications. He also emphasized NXP's exceptional chip sensitivity, which contributes to more reliable and powerful label products.
The UCODE G2iL and G2iL+ chips feature remarkable sensitivity in single-antenna setups, with a -18 dBm threshold, requiring half the RF power to activate compared to previous models. This results in a read range comparable to dual-antenna systems. When connected to a power source, the G2iL+ can achieve an impressive -23 dBm, significantly enhancing read and write performance.
Key features include:
- **Product Status Flag (PSF):** Allows repeated setting and resetting to indicate whether a product has passed quality checks or is used in EAS systems.
- **Read Protection:** Offers secure access control via a 32-bit password, protecting EPC/TID memory from unauthorized access.
- **Tamper Alarm:** Detects attempts to remove or damage the tag, sending an alert to the reader. Ideal for preventing theft in retail environments.
- **Digital Switch & Data Transmission:** Enables dynamic configuration at various stages, including point-of-sale, helping reduce theft and manage inventory effectively.
- **True Read Range Reduction:** Reduces the read range to just a few inches, ensuring consumer privacy and preventing unwanted tracking.
Built on NXP’s expertise in high-performance mixed-signal technology, the UCODE G2iL and G2iL+ offer ultra-low power consumption, making them a reliable and efficient choice for next-generation RFID systems. Whether for retail, fashion, or electronics, these chips deliver unmatched value, flexibility, and security.
