Ams introduces a new 1A buck converter with 96% efficiency to help extend the operating time of single-cell lithium battery devices

The AS1382 is a high-performance, 1A synchronous buck converter designed to meet the demanding requirements of single-cell lithium-ion battery-powered devices. Developed by ams, a leading provider of analog ICs and sensors, this new converter offers exceptional efficiency, low quiescent current, and a compact design that makes it ideal for modern electronics such as smartphones, wearables, and portable media players. Operating over an ultra-wide input voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V, the AS1382 can deliver output voltages as low as 0.6V with up to 96% conversion efficiency. This high efficiency significantly reduces power loss in the circuit, helping to extend battery life and improve overall system performance. Even in standby mode, the converter consumes just 0.04μA, making it one of the most energy-efficient solutions available in its class. The AS1382 is packaged in a wafer-level chip-scale package (WL-CSP6) measuring just 1.22mm x 0.85mm, with a pitch of 0.4mm. It supports fixed switching frequencies of 2MHz, 3MHz, and 4MHz, allowing designers to use small inductors and further reduce the board footprint. This compact design is perfect for applications where space is at a premium. In addition to its efficiency, the AS1382 offers two operational modes: low-ripple/low-noise mode for clean power delivery, and energy-efficient mode for improved battery life during operation. The built-in synchronous switch eliminates the need for an external Schottky diode, simplifying the design process and reducing component count. Available in both fixed and adjustable output voltage configurations—ranging from 0.61V to 3.35V—the AS1382 can support continuous load currents of up to 1A with minimal output capacitance (as low as 10μF). This flexibility allows engineers to tailor the converter to their specific application needs.
