Wal-Mart proves with a big show that the future of retail is VR
In a recent report, Digi-Capital once again highlighted the future of VR and AR, focusing on their potential in e-commerce rather than the more familiar VR gaming sector. This prediction aligns with a recent event held by Walmart’s innovation incubator, Store No. 8, which showcased the future of virtual retail in Los Angeles. The event, hosted at the LA Premium Hotel, brought together top content creators like 8i and Specular Theory to develop immersive shopping experiences for brands such as Rebecca Minkoff and Modcloth.
The goal was to introduce consumers to what is being called “environmental shopping,†where VR and AR allow for a more engaging and realistic experience. Store No. 8’s team believes that this shift will redefine the retail industry, making it more interactive and personalized.
Later that evening, a high-profile tech party took place at the Sheats-Goldstein Residence, an iconic location in Los Angeles. Attendees, dressed in formal attire, were equipped with HTC Vive headsets and controllers, immersing themselves in various VR experiences. The event, organized by Store No. 8, attracted not only media but also key players in the tech world.
Three months prior, Store No. 8 had launched a global initiative to find innovative VR content for e-commerce. Over 200 teams from around the world applied, with 30 selected after a rigorous evaluation process. Among them were companies like Fyusion, Obsess, and 8i, who created unique VR shopping experiences for major brands.
One of the most notable projects was a fishing simulation developed with Fishermen Labs, allowing users to explore different scenarios and even check out products in a virtual setting. This approach, known as “contextual commerce,†aims to bridge the gap between online and physical shopping by offering a more immersive and informative experience.
Despite the excitement, Katie Finnegan, head of Store No. 8, acknowledges that VR still faces challenges. Issues such as bulky hardware and motion sickness remain hurdles. While she predicts that VR could become a core part of retail within 5–10 years, it may take longer to fully integrate into everyday shopping habits.
Walmart isn’t alone in exploring these technologies. Companies like Alibaba and JD.com have also invested heavily in VR and AR, showcasing demos during major events. Meanwhile, Apple and Google are pushing forward with AR development through ARKit and ARCore, signaling a growing interest in augmented reality.
As the technology evolves, the future of retail may look very different. From virtual try-ons to AR-enhanced shopping experiences, the line between the digital and physical worlds continues to blur. Whether it's through glasses or headsets, the next decade may bring us closer to a truly immersive shopping experience.
