Recently, the company successfully raised the upper temperature limit of its operating range to 85°C, overcoming previous challenges in high-temperature environments. With optimized capacitor configurations, the maximum operating temperature has been increased from 70°C at 3.8V to 85°C at 3.5V — a significant improvement over conventional models, which could only operate up to 60°C under similar conditions. Since September 2012, this high-temperature-resistant product has been in full production at Taiyo Yuden Energy Device Co., Ltd. (Chairman and General Manager: Sakae Shoji, located in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture), achieving a monthly output of 100,000 units. The pricing for the models ranges from 500 yen for the LIC1235R3R8406, 1,000 yen for the LIC1840R3R8107, and 2,000 yen for the LIC2540R3R8207. Smart grids rely on advanced communication functions to enable wide-ranging power control. To support various power supply modes such as blackout prevention and voltage regulation, smart meters and centralized meter reading systems are now equipped with wireless communication and real-time locking features. This has created a growing demand for batteries that can provide longer life and higher current output during wireless communication. In response, cylindrical lithium-ion capacitors with high energy density, long life, and high voltage resistance have started to gain traction in the market. However, since these devices are often installed outdoors, the components must be able to function reliably in high-temperature environments. Conventional cylindrical lithium-ion capacitors typically operate up to 60°C, leaving a gap in the market for a more robust solution. To address this need, Taiyo Yuden implemented structural improvements in its cylindrical lithium-ion capacitor designs, enhancing product reliability without changing the size, capacitance, or internal resistance. The new model now operates up to 70°C, and even performs well at 85°C when operating at a maximum voltage of 3.5V. Looking ahead, Taiyo Yuden will continue to focus on large-capacity solutions and accelerate R&D efforts in the energy equipment sector.
