NetEase Smart News, December 13 — A new book suggests that sex robots could potentially revolutionize marriage as people increasingly choose partners for reasons beyond physical intimacy. Much like how the invention of contraception changed societal views on female sexuality, the development of realistic robotic companions may prompt a reevaluation of the role of sexual relationships in marriage.

John Danaher, a legal lecturer at the National University of Ireland, states, “We know that technology has historically influenced human relationships, so it’s reasonable to expect that sex robots will have a similar impact.”

Together with Neil McArthur, an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Manitoba in Canada, Danaher co-authored the book *Robot Sex: The Impact on Society and Ethics*, published in October last year. The book explores how sex robots could reshape various aspects of daily life, according to experts.

The authors argue that sex robots might lead people to place less emphasis on sexual fulfillment when choosing a spouse. For instance, two heterosexual men might decide to marry and raise children together, knowing their sexual needs can be met through robots. This shift could contribute to greater acceptance of non-monogamy, as the separation between sex and marriage becomes more common.

Marina Adshade, an economics lecturer at the University of British Columbia, notes, “The current demand for a new marriage model could drive the adoption of sex robot technology, which in turn could spark a marriage revolution.”

Danaher agrees, saying, “I believe sex robots will further weaken the link between sex and marriage, encouraging people to prioritize companionship, emotional support, and shared goals when selecting a partner.” However, he acknowledges that current technology is still far from its full potential. Products like Samantha, a voice-activated AI doll priced at $5,000, are just the beginning.

Danaher adds, “Sex robots like Samantha and Harmony are not yet close to the vision of the future, but they represent a step forward. Developments in social robotics—such as improved AI, enhanced movement, and emotional replication—are advancing rapidly and will eventually be integrated into sex robots.” He also emphasizes that single-purpose sex robots may not have a long-term future. Instead, multi-functional robots that include sexual intimacy could become more common.

Sergi Santos, the creator of Samantha, shares a similar perspective. In an interview with *Inverse*, he described his vision of a “Guardian Angel” robot capable of handling all aspects of human life. “Imagine having a robot that takes care of everything—your health, your work, even your emotions,” he said. “This would be a true companion, a protector, and a guide in life.”
