China Mobile is riding the wave, while China Unicom and China Telecom are struggling to keep up. This vividly captures the current state of 4G development among China's four major telecom operators. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, by the end of 2015, the total number of 4G users in China reached 386 million. Out of this, China Mobile had 312 million 4G subscribers, meaning over 80% of all 4G users were on its network. This dominance shows how far ahead China Mobile has pulled in the 4G race. Since the 4G license was issued on December 4, 2013, China Mobile’s growth has been nothing short of explosive. By October 2014, it had surpassed 50 million users; by January 2015, it hit 100 million; by July 2015, it reached 200 million, and by the end of 2015, it crossed the 300 million mark. In just one year, China Mobile added more than 200 million new 4G users. In comparison, China Telecom ended 2015 with 91 million 4G users, while China Unicom had a combined total of 184 million 3G and 4G users. The gap between China Mobile and its competitors is clearly widening. Faced with such a dominant player, China Unicom decided to take a different approach. It partnered with China Telecom to share 4G base stations and launched multi-mode terminals like Netcom. The two companies also agreed to collaborate on five key areas, including network construction, sharing, and improving interconnection quality. However, even with shared infrastructure, the total number of base stations still lags behind China Mobile’s massive network. According to Shang Bing, chairman of China Mobile, by 2016, the company planned to have over 1.4 million 4G base stations, covering 97% of the population. It also aimed to sell over 330 million 4G devices and serve more than 500 million 4G users. With such a strong market presence, can China Unicom or China Telecom realistically compete? Fu Liang, an independent telecom analyst, told the Securities Daily that there are opportunities, but they are limited. Ma Jun, chief analyst at China Ventures TMT, echoed this sentiment, saying that when one operator holds 80% of the market, the others face an uphill battle. He added that if China Mobile were concerned about anti-monopoly issues, it might intentionally slow down user growth. However, no such signs have emerged yet. Instead, he believes that China Unicom and China Telecom could team up to offer better pricing plans, devices, and services, building brand loyalty through word-of-mouth marketing.
