China Mobile is charging ahead, while China Unicom and China Telecom are struggling to keep up. This vividly captures the current landscape of China's four major telecom operators in the 4G era. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, by the end of 2015, the total number of 4G users nationwide reached 386 million. Out of this, China Mobile had an impressive 312 million 4G subscribers, meaning that over 80% of China’s 4G users were on its network. This massive lead has made China Mobile a dominant force in the market. Since the issuance of 4G licenses on December 4, 2013, China Mobile's growth has far exceeded expectations. By October 2014, it had more than 50 million 4G users, then hit 100 million in January 2015, 200 million in July, and finally surpassed 300 million by December. In 2015 alone, the company added over 200 million new 4G users. In contrast, China Telecom ended 2015 with 91 million 4G subscribers, while China Unicom had a combined total of 184 million 3G and 4G users. Despite these numbers, both companies are finding it challenging to match the scale and speed of China Mobile. Faced with such a strong competitor, China Unicom decided to take a different approach. It partnered with China Telecom to share 4G base stations and introduced multi-mode terminals, like Netcom. The two companies have agreed to collaborate in five key areas: network construction, infrastructure sharing, and improving interconnection quality. However, even with shared infrastructure, the total number of 4G base stations still lags behind China Mobile. According to Shang Bing, chairman of China Mobile, the company planned to exceed 1.4 million 4G base stations in 2016, covering 97% of the population and selling over 330 million 4G devices and reaching 500 million users. With such a massive network and user base, can China Unicom and China Telecom still compete? Fu Liang, an independent telecom analyst, told the Securities Daily that opportunities exist but are limited. Ma Jun, chief analyst at China Ventures TMT, also believes the chances are slim. He explained that when one operator holds 80% of the market, it’s extremely difficult for others to grow significantly. "If China Mobile is concerned about anti-monopoly regulations, it might intentionally slow down new user acquisition. But we haven’t seen any signs of that yet. Instead, China Unicom and China Telecom could unite to offer better pricing plans, devices, and services, focusing on word-of-mouth marketing and customer experience," Ma said.
