The next development trend of LED-backlit LCD TV

Lin Xiujie of Techno System Research of Japan introduced the next development trend of high-growth LED-backlit LCD TVs at the 7th TSR Seminar 2010 held on April 27. Previously, this site introduced the future market development trends from the supply of LED backlight components and the business strategy of major LCD panel manufacturers. This article will introduce LED backlight LCD panel technology.

Progress in cost reduction of edge-emitting type

One of the trends pointed out by Lin Xiujie is the current low-cost technology for edge-lit LED backlights. The position with the LED is reduced from four sides to two sides and further reduced to one side (Figure 1).

In 2009, the way to equip the LEDs on all four sides is the mainstream. However, in the spring of 2010, it was standard to equip the upper and lower sides with LEDs. Thus, "the cost can be reduced by 30%" (Lin Xiujie). Moreover, it is expected that Korean and Taiwanese manufacturers will mass-produce liquid crystal panels that are partially illuminated or extinguished by LEDs on the upper and lower sides in the first half of 2010 to perform local brightness control. Since it is a single light guide plate, a shadow is formed in a blurred manner. The biggest purpose of this approach is to use it as a heat-dissipating measure. Lin Xiujie considers this to be "the technology necessary for edge-emitting type".

Lin Xiujie predicts that in the middle of 2010, "will be centered on 32 to 37 inches, and there will be a way to equip LEDs only below." Compared with the method of arranging the upper and lower sides, this method can reduce the number of LEDs by 30 to 40%, so panel manufacturers plan to "substantially reduce the cost of 32-inch panels in the second half of 2010" (Lin Xiujie) ). In addition, as for the 40-inch or larger panel, it is expected to follow the way of the upper and lower sides. According to reports, many panel manufacturers plan to cut the light guide instead of unilaterally equipped with LEDs to reduce costs.

Lin Xiujie also pointed out that "although it is a follower, there will be panel manufacturers considering the use of the left and right sides." It is reported that supply will begin around June 2010. The way to equip the left and right sides has been released by Sharp in April. The feature is that the backlight can be scanned in the up and down direction, so it can be used in the 3D display "crosstalk" strategy of the frame sequential display mode.

Since the light guide plate is out of stock, the direct type backlight is unexpectedly noticed.

At present, the edge-emitting type is the mainstream, although it is more likely to continue to become mainstream in the future, but due to the shortage of the light guide plate introduced in the first article of this series, the direct-type LED backlight (with no local brightness control) is unexpectedly noticed. . A representative example of a liquid crystal television adopting this method is "LED AQUOS" released by Sharp in September 2009. Lin Xiujie pointed out that the direct type may become a powerful alternative when the light guide plate is seriously out of stock.

The problem of the direct type is the thickness of the backlight unit. When the original LED setting interval is 5 cm, the thickness of the backlight unit is 2.5 cm. This thickness becomes a major obstacle when used in LED-backlit LCD TVs characterized by ultra-thin shapes. However, the situation has changed recently. Straight-down type In order to reduce the number of LEDs used, a lens cap (Lens Cap) is generally used. Through the improvement of the lens cover, the thickness of the backlight unit can be "thinned to 1.5cm" (Lin Xiujie).

The transmittance of the LCD panel will increase to more than 7%

In the above various aspects, the improvement in the transmittance of the liquid crystal panel is advantageous in reducing the number of LEDs used, and therefore it is very important in terms of reduction in the driving cost. Regarding the improvement of the transmittance of the liquid crystal panel, Lin Xiujie also pointed out the future development trend (Figure 2).

Figure 2: The transmittance of the LCD panel is improved (in the slide is the data of Techno System Research, Japan)

Lin Xiujie first pointed out that the transmittance of liquid crystal panels will increase to more than 7% in 2010. By adopting the optical alignment technology introduced in 2009, as well as the improvement technology of color filters and copper (Cu) wiring technology, it is expected that major panel manufacturers will achieve a transmittance of liquid crystal panels of 7% or more. In addition, Lin Xiujie also pointed out that there has been a call for “up to 8 to 9% in 2011”.

Regarding the improvement technology of color filters, South Korea's Samsung Electronics and Taiwan's AU Optronics are considering the use of Color Filter on Array (COA) technology with color filters on the TFT substrate. In addition, Sharp is advancing the use of four-color color filters that add yellow to RGB three colors. In the copper wiring technology, the panel opening ratio can be increased by using a low-resistance copper-based material in the wiring to reduce the wiring width. Companies such as South Korea's LG Display are developing.

In addition, by increasing the transmittance of the panel, the number of LEDs can be reduced, but the number of light guides cannot be reduced. Lin Xiujie said that the lack of light on the light guide plate is a very serious problem. At the end of the speech, Lin Xiujie once again pointed out the importance of the issue.
