Invested 1.15 billion yuan BOE to build China's first large-scale OLED microdisplay device production line

In recent years, with the growing expansion of the augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR) market, OLED micro-display technology (Micro-OLED) products have gained significant attention due to their self-illumination and slim design. These products also feature lightweight properties, making business opportunities in AR/VR increasingly prominent.

To cater to the massive market demand and expedite strategic planning in the micro-display device sector, BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "the company") plans to collaborate with Yunnan North Orade Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Oreid"), Gaoping Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Gaoping Technology"), and Yunnan Yuzhong Industrial Development Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Zhongzhong Development"). Together, they will invest RMB 1.15 billion in Kunming, Yunnan Province, to establish China's first large-scale OLED micro-display device production line. This initiative aims to focus on the production, sales, and research and development of OLED micro-display devices.

According to relevant data, Oreid is the sole Chinese company that has mastered the core technologies of OLED micro-display devices and possesses the capability to mass-produce multi-spec OLED micro-displays. They have successfully overcome numerous key technologies, including "overall device structural design." More than 10 core patents have received ISO9001 quality management system certification, and an advanced production line capable of producing 450,000 micro-displays annually has been established.

Gaoping Technology is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kopin Corporation, Inc. (hereinafter referred to as "Kopin"). Kopin was founded in 1984 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and provides real-world, voice-enhanced, and wearable electronic end-product solutions. Their technology products include ultra-microdisplays, optics, and voice enhancement technologies, primarily used in military, industrial applications, and consumer electronic head-mounted computer systems.

Capitalizing on the AR/VR Market Opportunity

In recent years, with advancements in hardware and video technologies, the AR/VR industry has begun its commercial phase. According to data from the U.S.-based market research firm International Data Corporation, the VR industry is expected to experience rapid growth post-2016. By 2020, shipments are projected to reach 30 million units, generating an output value of $13 billion with a compound annual growth rate of 75% (output value).

Compared to traditional OLED displays that use glass as the backplate, OLED micro-displays utilize single-crystal silicon wafers (wafer) as the backplate. These displays not only offer self-illumination, thinness, lightweight properties, wide viewing angles, short response times, and high luminous efficiency but also excel in achieving high PPI (pixel density), compact size, portability, and low power consumption. These advantages make OLED micro-displays particularly suitable for AR/VR display devices like head-mounted displays, stereo mirrors, and eyeglass-style displays, fitting perfectly with the needs of these devices while offering vast growth potential.

To seize the AR/VR industry opportunities, the company must accelerate its strategic layout in the OLED micro-display device field.

Securing the Commanding Heights in OLED Micro-Display Technology

The OLED micro-display devices produced by Oreid have reached international advanced levels, surpassing U.S. competitors in all-digital design, gamma correction, grayscale resolution, power consumption, and product compatibility.

BOE and Oreid will collaborate to break through key technologies and secure leadership in the OLED micro-display device field. BOE stated that based on the current global consumer demand for OLED micro-display devices in the global consumer electronics market, the company’s customer resources, capital operation capabilities, and large-scale industrialization capabilities in display devices will be fully utilized.

Additionally, leveraging Oreid’s core patents and key technologies in OLED micro-display devices, along with Gaoping Technology’s commercialization expertise in displays, voice enhancement, and wearable electronic terminals, the company will introduce local capital development to strengthen cooperation. The four parties will jointly establish a new joint venture company, integrating various advantageous resources to further expand the technical landscape in the OLED field. This effort aims to accelerate the industrialization of OLED micro-display devices, enhancing the company’s technological innovation capabilities for cutting-edge products and securing competitive advantages in emerging markets. It also seeks to expand economies of scale and improve overall profitability.
