Lu Yanzhi was born in Dongping County, Shandong Province, and was born in Tianjin in 1894. He lost his father at the age of 8 and lived in Paris, France, at the age of 9 with his sister. After returning to China, he entered the Wucheng School in Beijing. In 1911, he was transferred to Tsinghua University. After graduating in 1913, he went to Cornell University in the United States. He began to study electricity and later changed to architecture. He graduated in 1918. He was an assistant to American architect Henry Murphy and participated in the campus planning and design of Jinling Women's University and Yanjing University. After returning to China, he first cooperated with others in the Southeast Construction Company to engage in architectural design. The main design was Shanghai Hong Kong Road Bank Association Building. Soon, he changed to Yanji Architects in Shanghai.
In September 1925, he won the first prize of Sun Yat-sen's mausoleum design and was hired as a mausoleum architect. In May 1927, he designed the Guangzhou Zhongshan Memorial Hall and the monument again.
Lu Yanzhi died in Shanghai on March 18, 1929.
