Dismantling Secret: Why is CREE's LED bulb so cheap?

In the CREE bulb family, the recently released low-cost series has received much attention. The concern is that there is no radiator for ordinary LED bulbs in the design of the entire bulb , and it is different from other CREE products. The product uses a plastic blister with through holes at the top and end of the blister to allow air to convect to dissipate heat. Instead of using an aluminum substrate in the bulb, a double-sided FR-4 sheet is used to form a cross-shaped cross-arrangement, and each surface is soldered with a CREE-made LED. The power supply is also placed inside the plastic case and inside the E27 lamp holder.


The lamp inside the bulb is XB-E High Voltage, which is the same series as the previously used 9.5W and 13.5W. From the perspective of the product route, CREE's bulb lamp cooling platform is common, and the light source platform is common. Based on the same cooling platform CREE also released BR bulbs and PAR lamps, based on platform development ideas is the strength of CREE. Several chip platforms have been developed from the SIC platform, various types of light source platforms have been developed using various arrangements of chips, and a series of bulb lamps have been developed using the light source platform. In this respect, CREE has been very successful. Few companies in domestic companies can achieve such a platform, serialization, and extended development route.

Seeing such a small light bulb reminds me of the flat-shaped light bulb that was released before PHILIPS. These two designs have the same effect! Such a small light bulb, what is its photoelectric parameter?

After getting the real thing, disassemble it in detail. The first place we found to be worth learning: no need to use a soldering iron during the entire bulb assembly process, no need to use a screwdriver!


First, PCB:

The PCB is a double-panel, the PCB line has high precision, and the position of the via hole is designed to be fine and assembled by means of up-and-down insertion. Due to the absorption of light on the surface of the PCB, the ink used on the PCB is a highly reflective ink.

Second, the connection method:

All line connection points have shrapnel and contacts. Contains contact between the PCB and contact between the PCB and the lamp cap.


One of the two shrapnel on the bottom PCB is in contact with the middle point of the lamp cap, and the other is the metal area adjacent to the spiral side.

Third, the power supply:

The power supply is integrated into one of the PCBs with the bead soldered, eliminating the need for a power supply and board PCB connection.

Previously, there were reports on the Internet that the market of bulbs after CREE and Ronda cooperation may drive the business of Ronda. It seems that CREE's own lamp beads are currently used on the bulb, and it has little to do with Ronda.

V. Cost:

From the perspective of the various components of the power supply, the certification and safety requirements are available, the price of components should be high, and the cost of the lamp bead should not be low. Why can you sell such a low price? This question deserves our deep thought.

Not afraid of God's opponent! Now for China's LED lighting companies, there are traditional companies like Philips and Osram in the field of lighting. There are also companies like CREE that have entered the industry to achieve high levels and then vertically integrate. Are our LED lighting companies still relying on lower labor costs and lower cost devices to make breakthroughs?

Seeing CREE's bulbs, I am a bit pessimistic. In the future light source market, Chinese companies may become more and more competitive and can only earn some processing fees. Even some well-known companies, the export value is so high, how many products are their own brands? The technology upgrade and the industrial transformation of the country have been called for many years, but seeing a new industry has gone the traditional way, is this a fate? I hope that the industry players will cheer for it!
