China's first automotive semiconductor design company aims at "China's smart creation"

Shanghai, April 27th, Datang Telecom Technology Co., Ltd. and Holland NXP Semiconductors Co., Ltd. announced here today that the first Chinese automotive semiconductor design company jointly established by the two parties will officially operate in the future. In the field of chip design, there has been “China’s wisdom”.

According to Cao Bin, Chairman of Datang Telecom Technology Co., Ltd., 90% of the new developments in automotive technology today are from automotive electronics technology innovation; in the field of new energy vehicles, automotive electronics accounts for more than 60% of the cost. Although China has become the world's largest automobile manufacturing base and sales market, high-end automotive electronics products have always been monopolized by European and American companies. Chinese automotive electronics companies can only produce low-end products such as car navigation systems and car audio and video systems. The level of horizontal automotive electronic control devices is far from the developed countries, and the number of talents in automotive-grade chip design is almost zero.

"Automotive electronics is a blue ocean market with great potential, especially the battery management integrated circuit market of new energy vehicles. In the next few years, it will become the focus of competition between domestic and foreign companies. Through joint ventures, Chinese enterprises can quickly enter the high-end automotive electronics field and accelerate the layout. The high-end industrial chain of integrated circuits," Cao Bin said.

NXP Semiconductors' executive vice president, Kurt Sifus, believes that China is the fastest growing automotive electronics market in the world, and working with Chinese companies will help NXP expand its product portfolio and increase its global market share.

The joint venture company Datang NXP has a registered capital of 20 million US dollars, and Datang Telecom and NXP have invested 51% and 49% respectively. According to Zhang Penggang, CEO and general manager of Datang NXP, the joint venture will mainly serve the Chinese local automobile market, focusing on the research and development of energy conversion integrated circuits for hybrid and electric vehicles, and will also focus on the electrification of diesel locomotives. The long-term goal is to become the world's leading automotive power management and drive semiconductor company.

It is understood that in order to adapt to the rapid changes in the future automotive industry and the leap-forward development of new energy fields, China has put forward the strategy of vigorously developing new energy vehicles and introduced the industrial development policy of “three horizontals and three verticals”. “Three verticals” refers to hybrid vehicles, pure electric vehicles, and fuel cell vehicles; “three horizontals” refers to multi-energy powertrain control systems, motors and their control systems, batteries and their management systems. These provide a broad space for the development of the high-end automotive electronics industry.
